What The Heck is a “Short Sale”?
A “short sale” is a home is worth less than the seller owes on the mortgage loan, sometimes called “being underwater.” The owner has petitioned his lender, and the lender has agreed, to accept a discounted amount in place of the full amount owed. Sellers should seek legal and tax advice before making the decision to seek approval for a short sale from their lender. Real estate agents are not qualified to act as lawyers or CPAs.
